Accepting New Clients 接受新客户

Frequently asked questions

Are you accepting new clients?

Yes, I am currently accepting new clients. However my client list is small in order to ensure the quality of services. Please check out my current availability via contact page.

What's your payment/cancellation/no show policy?

Payments for each appointment will be made by debit or credit card or ACH transfer via a therapy hosting platform. Please provide at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel an appointment. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice will incur a fee, unless I can reschedule with you within the same calendar week. After 2 no-shows or late cancellations within 3 months, I won't be able to schedule further appointments. This policy does NOT apply to emergency or unforeseeable situations, in this case, please let me know immediately.

How much does it cost?

Please check Services & Fees for current rates.

How long will I need therapy for?

It's case by case. Some people benefit from 5 sessions, others from 6 months to years. I'll provide input, feedback, and recommendations to decide what's best for you.

Do you take insurance?

I am in network with Aetna, United Healthcare, Oscar & Oxford.

Do you fill out FMLA paperwork?
I assist with FMLA for my existing self-pay clients who have worked with me weekly for at least 3 months, and continuously work with me weekly during the entire FMLA leave. (Read more below)
Do you write letters for emotional support animals or legal purposes?

No. I do not provide letters for legal/court cases, or for emotional support animals/therapy animals/animal-assisted accommodations. Writing such letters requires specific evaluations and expertise outside the scope of my practice and training. For these needs, I recommend seeking assistance from professionals who specialize in these areas.

Can I invite another person to my session?

Right now, I only see individual adult clients. Upon discussion, you may invite another person to attend a session with you occasionally in support of YOUR therapeutic goals. It is not same as family counseling or marriage counseling which requires different goals, treatment focus and a different therapist.

You helped me a lot, can you also work with my partner?

I'm honored that you value our work together. However, simultaneously seeing someone who you have close relationship with (spouse, partner, girlfriend/boyfriend, roommate, family members, best friend...) can risk the therapeutic objectivity and boundary. Please have your loved one find his/her own therapist.

Can you see me when I travel?

I am only licensed to provide therapy for clients residing within the states of California. This means, we will need to pause our sessions when you travel out of California, and resume upon your return. It is your responsibility to inform me of your travel plan prior to our scheduled sessions.

How does therapy typically end?

It's important to end well. Usually termination occurs when your goal is achieved. Sometimes, we may not be a good match. If you decide to leave, please provide several weeks' notice to allow for a smooth and complete transition. If I need to terminate our therapy, it will be because I believe I can no longer help you effectively. My ethical and licensing obligations require me to prioritize your needs and provide quality service. If I am not the best fit for you, I will let you know and provide recommendations. (Failure to pay, attend sessions, or communicate may also result in termination of services.)

What if I have mental health crisis?

I only provide non-emergency services. If you have an urgent or emergent need for mental health assistance, please CALL or TEXT Crisis Lifeline to 988, or call 911 and/or go to the nearest emergency department. Here is the crisis resource list.

To my best ability, I can schedule additional session before your next scheduled session for non-emergency stressful life situations. This is NOT a substitute for crisis intervention.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

All my services are conducted virtually/remotely. I do not see clients in-person. We meet at a scheduled time via a secure and compliant video via HIPAA-compliant video meeting platform/ video call. Occasionally, sessions are conducted via telephone call.

I see you on social media, can we be friends?

I do not engage or accept friend requests from current or former clients on any social networking sites or in real life. Doing so can compromise your confidentiality, our privacy, and blur the boundaries of our professional therapeutic relationship. If you have any questions about this policy, please bring them up during our session.

About FMLA

To be honest, FMLA is a tricky dilemma for many therapists and health care providers. On one hand, we truly understand why you need it. On the other hand, FMLA is likely not a one-time kinda deal for the certifying health care providers. Depending on your employer and its' insurance, we may need to provide on going supporting documents in our private time. Although majority of the clients seek therapy wanting to improve their mental health would stay for treatment, in some cases, it imposes risks for providers when clients exaggerate or false report their symptoms, or quit treatment after FMLA is approved.

Lastly, if you are still wondering if FMLA will make you feel better, I'd say this: FMLA is a temporary buffer, you are likely to feel a sense of short-term relief by taking a break. But a break itself will not provide you with knowledges, skills and tools to heal trauma, manage emotions, learn boundaries and have clarity about your future, which are all necessary for a sustained, long-term inner peace and happiness. You deserve that.

My Responsibility as a Therapist

Confidentiality

You have the right to therapy confidentiality, except in specific cases (read "Confidentiality & Exceptions" on the bottom of this page). I cannot share session details without your written consent. Under the Health Care Information Act, I may legally discuss your situation with another healthcare provider or a family member only in emergencies. You control who receives information, revocable at any time. HIPAA protects your privacy. I use encrypted email providers however it still poses potential risk to confidentiality.

Diagnosis

If a third party, such as an insurance company, is paying fully/partially for your services, I need to provide them with a diagnosis to receive payment. For self-pay clients with no insurance involved, there's no such disclosure.

Record Keeping

I maintain brief session records, covering dates, topics discussed, progress, interventions, therapist impressions, and next steps. Your privacy is ensured per HIPAA.

Your Responsibility as a Therapy Client

Attendance

You are responsible to attend sessions at the scheduled time. If you are late, we will end on time and not run over into the next person’s session. Over 20 minutes late, your session will be forfeited and you will be charged a fee for the no-show. Late cancellation/no-show fees are never covered by insurance.

Cancellation

Cancellations less than 24 hours in advance will be charged, unless we can reschedule within the week (Emergency situations exempt; just notify me promptly). After 2 missed sessions or late cancellations within 3 months, further appointments won't be possible.

Communication

You are responsible for maintaining open communication with me, including sharing any concerns, rescheduling/cancellation, payment, and upcoming travel plans.

Consent

You agree with all the policies when you work with me. You may also review and sign additional informed consent or additional policies in our treatment.

One More Thing to Keep in Mind

Confidentiality & Exceptions

With certain exceptions, your therapy sessions are completely confidential. I cannot share information about your sessions without your written consent. Under the Health Care Information Act of 1992, I may legally speak to another healthcare provider or family member without your consent in emergencies only. I prioritize your privacy and will only share information with those you direct me to, and you can revoke this permission at any time.

Legal exceptions to confidentiality include:

• If I believe you intend to harm someone, I must inform the potential victim and the police.

• If I suspect child or vulnerable adult abuse or neglect, I must report it to Child Protective Services or Adult Protective Services.

• If I believe you are in imminent danger of self-harm, I may contact the police or crisis team. I will discuss options with you first, but if necessary, I will make the call to ensure your safety.

Disclose of Medical Information

If a third party, such as an insurance company, is paying fully/partially for your services, I need to provide them with a diagnosis to receive payment. For self-pay clients with no insurance involved, there's no such disclosure.
